An overhead anchor is generally chosen because the connection is above the head and free-fall distance can be kept low. On roofs, concrete decks and steel structures, however, the suitable attachment point may be at or near foot level.

Why Does Anchor Height Matter?

The position of the anchor affects the geometry of a fall. With an overhead anchor, potential free-fall distance can generally be kept lower. With a foot-level anchor, the worker may fall past the level of the anchorage before the fall is fully arrested.

This can increase the distance travelled during the fall and the clearance required below the worker. It also changes the angle at which the lifeline and SRL are loaded. These differences become particularly important where there are structural elements, equipment or lower levels beneath the work area.In many applications, available clearance becomes the determining factor in whether a foot-level anchorage arrangement is suitable.

Understanding Foot-Level Anchorage

Foot-level anchorage means connecting the fall arrest system to an anchor positioned at or near the worker’s feet, rather than above the worker. An overhead anchorage is generally preferred, but it is not always available. On roofs, concrete slabs, steel structures and similar work areas, the available anchorage may be located at or near the working surface.

In such situations, foot-level anchorage may be required. However, this does not mean that any fall arrest equipment can simply be connected at a lower point. The anchor, connecting equipment and surrounding structure must be assessed together, particularly where the worker could fall over an edge or strike an obstacle. The fall arrest equipment must also be suitable for foot-level use.

Overhead vs Foot-Level Anchorage

Factor

Overhead Anchorage

Foot-Level Anchorage

Anchor position

Above the worker

At or near walking surface

Free-fall potential

Lower

Greater

Clearance requirement

Generally lower

Generally higher

Edge interaction

Generally lower where the lifeline remains vertical

Potentially greater where the lifeline passes over an exposed edge

SRL selection

Approved for overhead use

Specifically approved for foot-level use

The Sharp-Edge Challenge in Horizontal Applications

Foot-level anchorage and sharp-edge exposure often occur together, but they are not the same. When an anchor is positioned near the working surface, the lifeline may extend horizontally between the anchorage and the worker. If a fall occurs over the edge of a roof, deck, steel structure or concrete slab, the lifeline may come into direct contact with that edge while the fall is being arrested.

An SRL does more than simply connect the worker to an anchor. Its lifeline extends and retracts as the worker moves, while an internal braking mechanism activates during a fall. If a fall also occurs over an edge, the lifeline may be subjected to both fall-arrest forces and direct edge contact.

The edge can abrade, damage or cut the lifeline during a fall, particularly when the lifeline is loaded directly against the edge. A conventional overhead SRL should therefore never be assumed to be suitable for foot-level or sharp-edge exposure simply because it has an energy absorber or meets a general fall arrest standard.

From Risk to Reality: Falls from Height in Australia

While fall protection requirements vary across regions, the underlying risks associated with working at height remain consistent. Australia provides a recent, well-documented example: Safe Work Australia recorded 24 worker fatalities from falls from height in 2024, representing 13% of worker fatalities and making falls from height the second-leading mechanism of fatal injury.

Recent incidents reinforce the seriousness of this risk. In Queensland, a young worker fell approximately eight metres through a roof in September 2025, while another young worker fell approximately eight metres through a roof onto concrete in August 2025. WorkSafe Queensland also reported several other serious falls involving roofs, voids and fragile surfaces during 2025. The regulator notes that investigations into the exact causes of these incidents were continuing at the time of publication.

The regulator reports do not identify foot-level anchorage or SRL failure as causes of these incidents. However, they illustrate the potentially serious consequences of falls from height and reinforce the importance of selecting and using appropriate fall-control measures for the work being undertaken.

KStrong BRUTE and VULCAN: Matching the SRL to the Application

Because foot-level anchorage changes the conditions of a fall, the selected SRL must be designed and approved for the intended anchorage position and work environment.

Within the KStrong range, BRUTE SRLs are available in multiple wire-rope and webbing configurations, including specialised sharp-edge models for applications where edge interaction may occur. The compact 2 m VULCAN range is designed for foot-level anchorage and applications such as EWP baskets, where conventional overhead anchorage may not always be practical.

Applicable requirements vary by market and model. Depending on the intended market and specific product, KStrong SRLs may be certified or tested to requirements including ANSI Z359.14-2021, EN 360:2023 and AS/NZS 1891.3:2020. Regardless of the standard, foot-level suitability, horizontal use and sharp-edge capability must be confirmed for the specific model and should never be assumed to be interchangeable approvals.

Planning a Foot-Level Anchorage System

Selecting a suitable SRL is only one part of the process. The complete fall arrest system must also account for the anchorage, available clearance, worker movement and the possibility of edge exposure.

Check

Why It Matters

Manufacturer approval

Confirms the SRL is permitted for foot-level use

Edge capability

Needed where the lifeline may load over an exposed edge

Fall clearance

Must account for anchor height, worker position, device performance and obstacles below

Anchor strength

Must meet the applicable regulatory or system-design requirement

Setback from edge

Can affect fall clearance, swing-fall exposure and edge loading; follow device-specific instructions.

Swing-fall exposure

A fall away from the anchor line can cause impact with the structure

Rescue plan

Fall arrest stops the fall; it does not complete the rescue

Equipment Must Match the Application

An SRL should never be selected only by its length or load rating. Anchorage position, possible edge exposure, required fall clearance and manufacturer instructions must be considered together.

Where foot-level anchorage or potential edge exposure forms part of the application, purpose-designed models within KStrong’s BRUTE and VULCAN ranges provide options for these more demanding fall-arrest conditions. Selection must still be based on the exact model, approved anchorage position, applicable regional requirements, available clearance and manufacturer instructions.

Foot-level anchorage is not simply another tie-off position. It changes the geometry of the fall and the demands placed on the entire fall arrest system. By understanding anchor location, edge exposure, clearance requirements and equipment suitability, employers can make better-informed decisions when working at height.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]When working at height, the location of the anchorage point can change how a fall arrest system performs. During a fall, its mechanism locks. However, many standard SRLs are meant for vertical use with an overhead anchorage—the secure point above the worker to which the equipment is connected. They should not be used horizontally, connected at foot level or allowed to pass over an edge. Where horizontal use is required, the SRL should be specifically tested and approved for that application in accordance with the relevant standards.

Working horizontally almost always means working in close proximity to an edge.

Near the exposed edge of a roof, deck, concrete slab or steel structure, a fall can place the lifeline against the edge. The line may then be pulled over it under load. If the lifeline is not designed for this situation it can result in abrasion, deformation or cutting of the lifeline.

Another risk associated with working near an edge is the potential for an increased fall distance. When the anchor point is located at or near foot level, the worker may fall farther before the SRL arrests the fall. This can increase the clearance required below the worker and may result in greater forces being applied to the worker and the fall-arrest system.

Falls from height continue to be a significant workplace hazard in Australia. According to Safe Work Australia, falls from height accounted for approximately 13-15% of worker fatalities during 2023-2024. This highlights the importance of selecting fall-arrest equipment that is appropriate for the specific hazards, anchorage arrangements and work environment.

What does “Sharp-Edge Tested” mean?

Sharp-edge testing checks whether an SRL can arrest a fall if its lifeline comes into contact with an edge. For the KStrong Brute Leading Edge SRL, testing is conducted over a burr-free steel edge with a radius of 0.5 mm to represent a “worst-case” cutting/abrasion edge. This creates a standardised test condition for measuring the product’s performance.

A sharp-edge rating applies only to edge conditions similar to those covered by the product test. An edge that is sharper, rougher, rusty, damaged or burred may damage the lifeline. Therefore, the actual edge must be checked before the SRL is selected. If the edge condition is outside the product’s approved limits, the edge must be protected, the anchorage position must be changed, or another fall-protection method must be used.

How do Sharp-Edge SRLs help?

Sharp-edge SRLs are designed for work that standard overhead-use SRLs may not cover. KStrong’s current Australian Brute Sharp Edge range includes webbing models in 3.5 m and 7 m lengths and wire-rope models in 3.5 m, 7 m, 10 m, 15 m and 20 m lengths. Each of these configurations comes with a steel snap hook.
Depending on the model, other features may include an energy absorber, durable housing, swivel hardware and a fall indicator.

The correct lifeline type and length must be selected for the worksite. The installation position, user weight, anchorage requirements and clearance limits given for the exact model must still be followed.

When can one be used?

A sharp-edge SRL may be considered where horizontal movement or edge contact cannot be avoided, including roofing, steel erection, bridge work, deck installation, concrete slab work and industrial maintenance. Higher-order controls should be considered first, such as eliminating access to the edge, work restraint systems, or overhead anchorage.

As with all work at height activities, PCBUs should ensure fall hazards are identified, assessed and controlled in accordance with applicable WHS legislation and the hierarchy of controls. Sharp-edge SRLs should be considered as part of an overall fall protection system, not as a substitute for higher-order controls where these are reasonably practicable.

The anchor point must meet the strength and positioning requirements stated in the selected SRL’s instructions. The lifeline must extend freely between the SRL and the worker without rubbing against other obstacles or running at an unapproved angle. There must also be enough clear space below the worker to prevent them from hitting the ground or another obstacle. Sideways movement must be controlled because it can cause a swing fall towards a nearby structure.

Always refer to product instructions for approved applications, clearance requirements and compatibility limitations.

Correct use is essential

The manufacturer’s instructions must always come first. For the setup covered by the KStrong Brute Leading-Edge manual, the SRL’s anchorage point must be positioned at least 600 mm back from the potential sharp edge. This requirement is model-specific and must not be treated as a universal rule for every SRL.

Before every use, inspect the SRL’s housing, lifeline, energy absorber, connectors and fall indicator. Check that the lifeline retracts steadily and that the locking mechanism works correctly. If cuts, heavy wear, broken wires, corrosion, deformation or damaged connectors are found, remove the SRL from use immediately and send it to a KStrong Certified Service Centre for inspection. It may be repaired and returned to use only after the service centre confirms that it is safe. If it cannot be repaired, it must be permanently removed from service.

Use the instructions or clearance chart for the exact SRL model to confirm that there is enough clear space below the worker. Consider the anchorage position, the distance required to stop the fall, sideways movement, swing-fall risk and nearby obstructions. A rescue plan must be ready before work begins so that a suspended worker can be brought to safety quickly.

Understanding compliance

Certification to a general SRL standard does not automatically mean that the product is approved for sharp-edge, horizontal or foot-level use. EN 360:2023 introduced additional testing requirements for SRLs intended for foot-level attachment in horizontal applications, including tests involving loading over an edge. To address these specialised requirements, KStrong offers the Brute Sharp Edge SRL range, specifically designed and tested for approved edge-related applications. The range is available in webbing and wire-rope configurations to support different worksite requirements.

AS/NZS 1891.3 address the manufacture, selection, use and maintenance of fall-arrest equipment. Product markings, technical data sheets and manufacturer’s instructions should always be reviewed to confirm that the selected SRL is suitable for the intended application and worksite conditions.

What matters most

Working near an exposed edge leaves no room for error. KStrong Brute Sharp Edge SRLs are designed for demanding edge-related applications, offering tested capability across webbing and wire-rope configurations. When the correct model is matched to the edge, anchorage position and available clearance—and used within its approved limits—the range supports a dependable and compliant approach to fall arrest near exposed edges.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] Working near an edge changes the risk A self-retracting lifeline (SRL) extends and retracts as the worker moves.
